Machine
Analysis on machine (Ellie Taylor)
Narrative: The narrative of the video is about an invasion and how the humans rebelled against the intruders. Throughout the video, there are scenes of a prison-like place in which there are cages and metal chains. This gives connotations that the characters escaped the prison and are attacking back at the intruders. This leads to the humans killing the villains.
Technical codes: The use of technical codes in the music video shows the audience a wide variety of camera angles and movement which make sure that the characters are always in the shot and the main character is in the middle of the shot to show the importance. The camera movements at the start of the video track the vehicle and this gives the audience an establishing shot; this allows the location to be shown. The use of editing in the video allows the audience to understand the location changing and the different locations as they are a pop band. The lip syncing in the video convey the performance side of the video alongside the narrative.
Visual codes: The use of costume in the video help denote the type of music video it is and what the music video is based upon for example they are wearing armour to connote the narrative as war-related and a battle occurring in the video; however, the band that played the rebelling characters are wearing bright colour to show the genre of their music to make sure that the audience can understand that the video is pop. The use of props in the video also helps the narrative be apparent to the audience as the weapons show violence gives connotations of the video being about war and rebelling.
Representation: The representation of the music video is going against the female stereotypes as being the damsel in distress (Props character types) and showing power and being the protagonist in the video. The video shows the female leading the men into battle, as she is the leading singer it is clear to the audience who she is and that she is the main character.
Audience: The audience in the video is targeted at the young generation aged between 13-18 because the use of colours; as the bright colours attract young teens and an audience who likes pop music. It attracts to the old teenagers because the idea of violence and rebelling is stereotypically aimed at the older teens.
Our Own House
Introduction
I will be creating an analysis of this music video and I will be looking into the different aspects of a music video and will see how this music video uses these topics in their music videos.
Narrative
The narrative of this music video is about the band being taught to dance. This all starts off with a show of a newspaper article showing the audience that there is a job opening as a dance coach and we then see many people dancing until they choose who they want. This then goes to them being taught how to dance in a studio apartment. They then go onto dancing in a dance battle. This music video doesn't have a large narrative as I believe they wanted to focus on their performance in their music video as this is common in their other music videos.
Mise-en-scene
The mise-en-scene in this video is very bright especially in the final scene where we see all of the band members dressed up in neon clothing. This has connotations of fun and happiness; this represents the band in a strong way as they are seen as positive. Also the band they're up against are dressed in black which automatically makes them stand out as one sides bright which has connotations if good and then the other side is dark which has connotations of bad.
Sound
In this music video there is only the non-diegetic sound of the song so therefore this means that there isn't any other sound used in this music video. Also as this music video is heavily performance the key part is the lip-syncing which is very good in this music video.
Camera
There are many good shots in this music video, this involves shots that make the band look powerful like one of the final shots where the camera is slightly pointing up towards them. This has connotations of power. Also when the other band are dancing there are a lot of camera shots where the camera is looking down on them which shows them with little power. This creates the image for the audience that this team isn't as good as misterwives.
Conclusion
This is a very good music video which is heavily performance based, this shows little narrative, however, there is a narrative but it isn't very clear. By doing this analysis it has allowed me to think about the music video of the song that I am using and it has given me a few ideas about who the people in the band are which I will be able to use in the music video.
Reflections
Narrative
The narrative of the music video is based on a group of teenagers who cause mischief in school and the main characters in the video being the artists are causing a disturbance throughout school and in detention which they then escape from. There is a low angle used from the teacher's point of view where the students are standing together in a group looking at him, this has connotations of power. There is also a long shot, where there is a food fight in the hall which portrays the students as bad and difficult by disturbing the calm school nature. The last shot used in the video was a long shot of artists/students running away from the school because they have escaped from detention, this has connotations of bad behaviour and shows how they are against the school conduct. The overall narrative of the music video shows how students misbehave and escape from school.
Setting
The setting of the music video is based in an American school, where the students are wearing a basic uniform. This helps relate to everyday life and how students disturb lessons and mess around and are not bothered by the school conduct and how the school is led. The fact that it is set in a school environment can show who the music video would be aimed at and the narrative within the setting explains the stereotypes we face against teenagers in society. The school itself seems to be very old fashioned and has the appearance of an old castle. This could have been done because it links to the conventions of an indie pop genre since the setting seems a little old-fashioned.
Representation
In the music video, there are representations of misbehaviour and catastrophe because all the students are causing havoc and disturbing not only the students around them but the teachers as well. Specific scenes that portrayed this were the food fight scene where some students have caused a massive mess that will affect only the students but the cleaners too. Plus, the scenes at the end where the artists can be seen tying up a teacher and putting a gag in his mouth and then they run off. This connotes them as troublemakers. Whereas the teachers are seen as the victims because they are being tortured within the video by having to deal with the pupils who are causing negative disturbances during school and they try to stop it but they can’t. This music video shows the stereotypes in today's society that all teenagers are seen as troublemakers and nothing else when really there is a variety of teenagers some may be bad behaved but not all of them. The fact the Artist is in the video could make the meaning of the video stronger because she herself is tired of this stereotype.
Target Audience
I believe that the target audience of the music video are teenagers because the narrative is based on teenagers who are causing trouble and this means that teens can then relate to this content. It can relate to how they are misunderstood in society and how there is difficulty showing that teenagers are not the same and that they all have different values. The music video touches on a problem that we have in today's society that needs to go.
