Music Video Target Audiences Questionnaire
1.What is your age group?
4 out of 8 of the respondents were aged between 10-20, 2 were aged between 20-30, 1 was aged between 30-40 and 1 was aged at 60+.
2.How regularly do you watch music videos?
3 out of 8 respondents said that they rarely watch music videos. Whereas 2 said they watch them one a month, another 2 said they watch them every day and 1 said they watch them once a week.
3. Do you like this music video?
5 out of 8 respondents said they did but 3 said they did not enjoy the video.
4.What age group do you believe this music video is aimed at?
The majority of respondents being 6 said they think the video is aimed at the ages between 10-20 and then 1 respondent answered between the ages of 0-10 and then 1 said between the ages of 50-60. This means that we should try to have aspects of our music video that are appealing to an audience between the ages of 10-20.
5.What was effective about this video?
The listed responses:
· The different uses of location
· It has an interesting storyline and a good dance routine
· The lyrics
· Effective
· The characters within the video
· The two different sides
· The colours used which were bright and the song was very catchy.
All the answers differentiate from one another but are all elements of a good music video. We can now take these answers so that we can include it in our own video so that we are able to attract our target audience.
6.What do you think a pop music video should involve?
The listed responses:
· Different colours, different locations and expensive clothing and equipment
· Interesting visuals and the artist as the main person featured
· The artist
· Bright colours, narrative and performance but mostly performance
· Balloons popping
· Dancing
· Bright colours, musical instruments, dancing and performance with a bit of narrative.
The answers are all different but some share certain ideas. Such as the choice of colours that are used particularly bright colours, the artist and how there should be both narrative and performance. By using this information we can include this in our music video so that we can make our video have a clear understanding and show clear conventions of a pop music video so that our chosen artist will be portrayed in the correct way.
7.Do you prefer narrative or performance based music videos?
4 out of 8 answered both, 2 answered narrative and another 2 preferred performance
We can use these answers so that we can base our music video on both narrative and performance so that we are able to appeal our target audience.
8.Would you prefer a female or male protagonist?
The majority of respondents being 6 out of 8 said a female protagonist whereas the other 2 said a male protagonist.
This will help us decide whether we should include a male or female protagonist. Since a female protagonist was a more popular answer, we will try to include a female audience so that we have a more attractive music video.
9.Do you think mise-en-scene in important in a music video?
5 out of 8 answered yes and 3 answered with no.
We will ensure that we will use mise-en-scene because it is key in portraying our narrative correctly and making sure that our audience has a clear understanding of our music video.
10.Why do you watch music videos? Is it for the song or is it for the story behind the song?
The listed responses:
· For the narrative of the song
· For the song
· Both
· Because it is effective
· For the song
· Neither
· The song
· The story behind the song because it makes the song more interesting.
The responses above show that many of the respondents watch music videos just for the song. Whereas some did say for the story/narrative of the song. We can use these responses so that we can make sure our video is watched because of the narrative and song since there was an equal divide in answers. This will ensure that every aspect of our video is aimed to attract our target audience.
This will help us when filming our music video because we can use the qualitative data collected so that elements of our music video interest a large audience. For example, the use of different locations, the choose of colours or the type of narrative the video will have etc.
We will use these results to inform our own music video so that we are able to attract our target audience. Specific questions such as who the respondents thought the music video would be aimed at means we can alter our music video to try to make sure that individuals between the ages of 10-20 find our music video appealing. Also, finding out what was effective in the video and what the participants thought should be involved in a pop music video means we can take these answers to ensure that our music video is a good representation of a pop music video. We can also base our music video on performance or narrative and the answers given in this questionnaire will help us establish if we should include one or both of them. We also found out if the audience would prefer to see a female or male protagonist in the video and this allows us to include characters who are either a male or female protagonist. We also have to make sure we include key mise-en-scene because a majority of the respondents said they believed this is important, so we have to make sure our mise-en-scene has relations to our music video. Lastly, we found out if audiences preferred to see a music video because of the story or the song and there was a variation in answers and this means we can adapt our music video so that it suits our target audience.
This will help us when filming our music video because we can use the qualitative data collected so that elements of our music video interest a large audience. For example, the use of different locations, the choose of colours or the type of narrative the video will have etc.
